Lee & Hayes Sponsored Robotics Team Wins "Impact Award"

Lee & Hayes sponsored the Penfield High School "Rolling Thunder" Robotics Team during the Finger Lakes Regional "In First" robotics competition at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) on March 18. This incredible team won the “Impact Award” during the competition, and was selected to participate in the World Championship in Houston later this year!

  
Dominic Ciminello, Lee & Hayes Partner, has been involved with this robotic team in various fundraising events for the last several years such as the annual Grateful Red Music Festival.

The competition tasked 55 teams from all over the region and even teams from Pennsylvania, Canada, and Taiwan with building a semi-autonomous robot from the ground up (with certain design constraints). Then as part of a timed competition, all the robots (8 at a time) were put within a confined area about the size of a tennis court, and tasked with collecting different objects (mini traffic cones, inflated cubes, etc.) at various locations within the competition area. The robots must return as many of the objects as possible to the team’s zone safely before time expires. The robots operate autonomously for part of the time, and are under operator control for the remainder of the time.

The FIRST Impact Award (formerly Chairman’s Award) is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders.
